The "Stem" Machine
Location: San Filippo del Mela, Italy
Type: Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) with Thermal Energy Storage (TES)
Status: Operational
Year of establishment: 2012
Installed Capacity: 2 MWt
Project Description
It is operated by Magaldi Group, and has been operating since June 2016. Heliostats capture the Sun's rays and reflect them onto a large mirror, which then redirects the sunlight into a cylindrical steel container filled with sand. Here, sand is exposed to temperatures of over 600 ˚C. The hot sand then produces steam which generates electricity.
Purpose/Application
Power and heat production and storage.
Unique Aspect
This project is a very original alternative to other types of renewable energy. Contrary to solar panels, Stem can also produce energy at low temperatures and in the absence of sunlight (even at night time). It is a solar battery and uses materials that are compatible with the environment, which makes it eco-friendly as well.
