The Panda Solar Farm
Location: Datong, China
Type: Solar PhotoVoltaic (PV)
Status: Operational
Year of establishment: 2016
Installed Capacity: 100 MWe
Project Description
It is operated by Panda Green Energy and connected to grid on June 24, 2016. To create the visual effect of dark and light solar panels both darker monocrystalline silicon and lighter thin film cells were used, that mimic the coloring and shape of a giant panda. This is just the first of 100 panda-shaped solar plants planned across China and Asia.
Purpose/Application
Electricity production.
Unique Aspect
It is partially a PR campaign as China continues to lead the world in renewable. Moreover, this project will also play a crucial role in getting young people to engage with sustainable development. Young candidates from around China have a possibility of participating in summer camps at the panda power stations, with a focus on providing them with a deeper understanding of green energies.
