Thar Engro Coal Power Project

Location: Sindh, Pakistan

Type: Conventional Coal

Status: Under construction

Year of establishment: 2019

Installed Capacity: 660 MWe

Project Description

The Thar Engro Coal Power Project (Thar-ll) is a coal-fired power plant under construction in Tharparkar District, Sindh, Pakistan due for completion by 2019. Thar coal field deposits, which are the 16th largest coal reserves in the world, were discovered in 1991. The initial phase will consist of two 330 MWe plants which will have a Sub-Critical Circulating Fluidized Bed boiler, steam turbine, and generator each.

Purpose/Application

The project will employ Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) technology which is a developing technology for coal combustion to achieve lower emission of pollutants. By using this technology, up to 95% of pollutants can be absorbed before being emitted to the atmosphere.

Unique Aspect

The project includes refilling of coal pits, once the coal reserves have been exhausted. Several hundred thousands of indigenous trees are to be planted in order to maintain the natural ecosystem of the desert.
