Gemasolar Thermo Solar Plant
Location: Fuentes de Andalucía, Sevilla, Spain
Type: Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)
Status: Operational
Year of establishment: 2011
Installed Capacity: 17 MWe
Project Description:
The plant consists of 2,650 heliostats, distributed in concentric rings around the 460 ft high tower receiver. The total land use of the heliostats is 195 hectares. In addition, it is equipped with a PCM storage system, which allows it to produce electricity for 15 hours without sunlight, thus allowing energy to be supplied based on demand.
Purpose/Application:
Its main purpose is to produce clean energy from sunlight.
Unique Aspect:
Gemasolar is the first commercial solar plant with central tower receiver and molten salt heat storage technology. This is a relatively new technology and the current results of operation seem to be promising enough to make this place worth a visit, to explore the technicalities of the system.
