Project Description

Power is generated on tidal inflows only, and the outflow is sluiced away (one-way power generation). It is helped by ten 25.4MW submerged bulb turbines driven in an unpumped flood generation scheme. The power plant produces 552.7 GWh of electricity annually – enough to support the domestic needs of a city with a population of 500,000.

Purpose/Application

Built for power generation and improvement of water quality of the Sihwa Lake by seawater circulation. 

Unique Aspect

It is the world’s biggest tidal power installation. It is formed of 10 generators, which produce a total energy capacity equivalent to 862,000 barrels of oil (approx. 137 mln liters).
With the 12.7 km in length, it is also a popular spot for recreation activities and sports.
