Spittelau Waste Incineration Plant
Location: Vienna, Austria
Type: Waste Incineration
Status: Operational
Year of establishment: 1992
Installed Capacity: 6 MWe, 60 MWt
Project Description
The building was finished in 1992. The Spittelau waste incineration plant processes around 250,000 tonnes of household waste every year. The environmentally friendly heating produced at Spittelau is sufficient for more than 60,000 households in Vienna in a year.
Unique Aspect
The famous painter and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser completely redesigned the façade of the whole works. Its colourful façade, the golden ball on the chimney, roof greenery, and planted trees have made the new Spittelau unmistakable and a Viennese landmark on a par with St Stephen’s cathedral and the Riesenrad Ferris wheel.
