PetroSA Biogas Project
Location: Mosselbay, Western Cape Province, South Africa
Type: Biogas
Status: Operational
Year of establishment: 2007
Installed Capacity: 4.2 MWe
Project Description
It was the first non-recourse project financed by IPP deal, concluded in South Africa in October 2007. It was also the first project to successfully register for Carbon Credits. The project uses biogas produced as a by-product of anaerobic digestion when dealing with waste process water at the gas-to-liquids plant. It saves a lot of energy and produces less greenhouse gases.
Purpose/Application
The MethCap plant uses this waste biogas to generate electricity that is used on-site by PetroSA making the refinery less reliant on electricity supplied from the national grid.
Unique Aspect
This project serves as an example of what can be achieved by thinking creatively and implementing high-specification technology in the developing world.
