Pellworm Hybrid Renewable Energy Plant

Location: Island of Pellworm, North Sea region in Germany

Type: Wind, solar, biomass energy plant with hybrid energy storage systems (HESS)

Status: Operational

Year of establishment:1983 (part one), 1992 (part two), renewed in 2006

Installed Capacity: 772 kW Wind / 300 kW PV, Redox-Flow-Battery 200 kW, Lithium-Ion-Battery 1.1 MW

Project Description

The “Smart Region Pellworm” project consist of: a combination of various storage types, or hybrid energy storage systems (HESS), linked to a smart grid that serves to increase compatibility between power generation and consumption.

Purpose/Application

The island produces a total of renewable energy from around 22.5 MWh/year, which is about twice of the island's power need. The energy is used not only for recreation but also for power supply. Nevertheless, electricity is also imported from the mainland at times.

Unique Aspect

All components of the smart grid are equipped with intelligent communication technology to optimise energy flows and to better coordinate production and consumption. As part of the SmartRegion Pellworm project, the island’s existing power infrastructure was supplemented by a variety of components that make it possible to better control energy flows and to achieve an optimal balance between power output and usage.
