Oi Thermal Power Station
Location: Shinagawa, Tokyo, Japan
Type: Oil
Status: Operational
Year of establishment: 1971
Installed Capacity: 1050 MWe
Project Description
It is operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO). It has three electricity generation units each with a capacity of 350 MW with the first unit commissioned on 1971. In subsequent years the remaining two units were added. The plant uses low sulfur crude oil (around 0.1% to 0.3%) imported from Indonesia and Australia.
Purpose/Application
Electricity Generation in response to power demand fluctuations.
Unique Aspect
Located at the periphery of the Tokyo Bay, it utilizes the water from the bay for steam generation and cooling purposes. It is one of the very few thermal power stations, run solely on crude oil. It lies in the vicinity of main Tokyo cultural center allowing it to be a popular family tourist destination.
Future Plans
As it is designed to meet fluctuations in demand, it not the primary power generation plant and eventually it will be decommissioned as TEPCO focuses its shift towards renewables.
