Project DescriptionManapōuri is a hydro power station located in Fiordland National Park, South Island, New Zealand.The hydro power station is located underground, with the station’s generating units housed in a cavern excavated from rocks 200 meters below the surface of Lake Manapōuri. It has seven 122 MWe generating units, and an operating maximum station output of 800 MW.

Purpose/Application

To contribute to the grid of South Island. Manapōuri generates enough electricity each year for about 619,000 average New Zealand homes.

 

Unique Aspect

This power plant is a perfect opportunity to educate young minds on renewable energy especially hydro power. The most interesting thing about this plant is that it is located underground. Moreover, the Manapōuri project is regarded as the birthplace of New Zealand’s environmental consciousness.

Maintenance is underway.
