Project Description
Boxberg power plant has an installed capacity of 2,575 MW. This generates 17.4 billion kWh power outlet and 125 MWth district heating outlet in 2019. In full load operation 65,000 tones of lignite are burned per day. Originally three plants were included. Plant I and II have been shut down, plant III renewed and plant IV has been newly build with one blocks each in 2000 and 2012.
Purpose/Application
Owning huge reserves of lignite, Germany is unique in his high energy amount generated out of lignite power plant. Small distances between mines and power plant make up for the low calorific value and high emission of lignite compared to hard coal
Unique Aspect
Boxberg power plant has been the biggest lignite power plant in DDR until 90s. Nowadays, it is modernized, including a new block R (2012) which has high efficiency of 43.7 % and has a flexible range for usage of installed capacity, which enables to stables the German grid.
