Project Description

Starting in 1957, initial phase of the construction was completed in 1962. At that time, it was the largest hydroelectric power plant in South East Asia. The dam is located in Kaptai Lake which originates from the river Karnaphully. Water storage capacity is 6,477 million cubic metres.

Purpose/Application

This is the only hydroelectric power plant in Bangladesh. The lake is surrounded by hills and forests. It's a very popular tourist destination because of the surrounding hills, forests, ethnic people, and recreational facilities.

 

Unique Aspect

It is an important KPI of Bangladesh as well as popular tourist destination. Visitors go through the spiral roads of the beautiful Chittagong hill tracts regions.

 

Future Plans

There is a plan to install two new 50 MW units that will bring the capacity of the dam up to 330 MW.
