KANNAGAWA HYDROPOWER PLANT
Location: Nagano Prefecture and Gunma Prefecture, Japan.
Type: hydropower
Status: in partial operation
Opening date: Unit 1: 2005; Unit 2: 2012; Units 3-6: 2020
Installed Capacity: 2 820 MW
Project Description
Water is pumped from a higher reservoir to a lower one. The pump-generators then pump water back to the upper reservoir, where can be reused by the plant.
Purpose/Application
In Japan, not having much fossil-fuel resources, the usage of pumped-storage plants plays an important role in hydropower generation. Hydropower plants in Japan accounts for over 14% of the utility’s installed capacity of 63 GW.
Unique Aspect
It represents the largest plant of its type in the world. The power station in between the two dams will contain six 470 MW pump-generators for a total installed capacity of 2.82 GW. As a pumped-storage power plant, will be able to cover 900,000 households.
