Kamuthi Solar Power Plant

Location: Tamilnadu, India

Type: Solar Photovoltaic (PV)

Status: Operational

Year of establishment: 2017

Installed Capacity: 648 MWe

Project Description:

Kamuthi Solar Power Project spreads over an area of 2,500 acres, with a generating capacity of 648 MW at a single location. It was the world's second largest solar park at the time of its construction.

Purpose/Application:

This solar plant consists of 2.5 million solar modules, 380,000 foundations, 27,000 meters of structures, 576 inverters, 154 transformers, and almost 6,000 km of cables. It is developed as the first step to reduce the coal usage in India.

Unique Aspect:

Kamuthi is located close to the equator of the earth which provides good sunlight over the day, which is converted into electrical energy. These panels are cleaned on a daily basis by a robotic system, which is in turn charged by solar power, thereby making it a self-sustaining system, which makes it perfect example for the a society to understand more about conventional energy sources.
