Project Description
This plant is considered as one of the oldest plants of its type. The energy produced is in the form of electricity and heat. This plant produces hot water and also generates electricity for the district. This project was initiated in 1987 and after stages of commissioning, the last 30 MWe generator was installed in 2005.
Purpose/Application
Geothermal water is used for heating purposes and cold water is supplied for consumption and fire-fighting. This plant is meeting the energy needs of 20 communities which make up to 67% of the whole Icelandic population.
Unique Aspect
Situated in a serene location, it is a good sight for tourism. Tours to this site are also organized.
