Project Description
Żarnowiec power plant was commissioned in 1983 and has four 200 MW Francis pump turbines to send water from its lower reservoir which is Lake Żarnowiec, up to an upper reservoir for storage. During high power demand periods, water is released down on the turbines to produce power. The maximum storage capacity is 3600 MWh.
Purpose/Application
This power station was intended to be a load-balancer for Żarnowiec Nuclear Power Plant which was planned to be constructed on the other side of Lake Żarnowiec.
Unique Aspect
Żarnowiec is the largest hydro power plant in Poland and plays an important role in regulation of the electric grid.
