Drax Power Station

Location: North Yorkshine, England

Type: Biomass Energy

Status: Operational

Year of establishment:1973

Installed Capacity: Has a capacity of 3,906 MW and produces around 20 TWh of power a year

Project Description:

Drax Power Ltd is proposing to modify up to two of the coal-fired generating units (known as Units 5 and 6) at Drax Power Station, near the town of Selby, North Yorkshire to become a gas-powered generating plant.

A new gas pipeline will be built to connect to the existing National Transmission System pipeline approximately 3 km to the east across largely agricultural land.

At this early stage in the planning process, these figures represent the maximum parameters of the project in terms of electricity generating capacity.

The proposal includes associated development:

  • A new gas connection, entering the eastern side of the existing power station

  • An electrical connection into the 400 kilovolts (kV) substation from the repowered unit(s) would allow for electricity to be distributed into the National Grid.

Purpose/Application:

  • A zero-carbon economy: Meeting climate change commitments and leaving our environment better than we found it.

  • A lower cost energy system: Ensuring the energy system becomes less expensive and helps rebalance the economy.

  • Greater security and control: Providing an abundant supply of renewable energy and giving customers greater control of their energy.

Unique Aspect:

Its generating capacity of 3,906 megawatts (MW) is the highest of any power station in the United Kingdom, providing about 6% of the United Kingdom's electricity supply.
