Project Description

It is tidal turbine installed in Scotland by Atlantis Resources Corporation. The turbine is deployed in the seabed and stands 73 ft tall. The simple and robust turbine weighs around 1,300 tonnes. It is the largest and most powerful tidal power turbine in the world. A horizontal axis turbine, it is effective in water current speeds exceeding 2.6 m.

 

Purpose/Application

It is the largest ever tidal turbine in the world. The AK-1000 is designed to subsist in harsh weathers and rough, open ocean environments.

 

Unique Aspect

This turbine is installed at European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland, which is a good place for students to learn what research is going on in the sector of marine energy.
