Project Description
The Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam is the largest hydro power producer in the world with generation capacity of 14 GW. The plant is operated by Itaipu Binational and located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay.
Purpose/Application
The concept behind the Itaipu Power Plant was the result of serious negotiations between the two countries- Brazil and Paraguay during the 1960s to fulfill the needs of electricity for both countries. Energy generated by Itaipu helps meet demands from the two countries. About 90% of the energy generated by the plant is used by Brazil
Unique Aspect
The Itaipu Dam is the largest hydro-electric power station in the world in power output terms, at 98 trillion watt-hours generated per annum. Provides almost 80% of energy to Paraguay.
