Project Description
Mettur dam is located in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu across the river Cauvery which originates in the state of Karnataka. Mettur dam generates electricity from four units. Each unit generates 12.5MW of electricity. The dam in total generates 50 MW of
electricity. The amount of electricity generated varies from time to time because of the flow of the river through the different seasons.
Purpose/Application
Apart from the fact of generating power, Mettur dam acts as a reservoir to store water and use it during the drought seasons. The flow of Cauvery river increased drastically during the monsoon seasons and also caused floods, the floods have been reduced since the construction of the dam.
Unique Aspect
Mettur dam is one of the largest dams located in India and the largest dam in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is also the largest Hydro power station in Tamil Nadu. Keeping in mind the the time it was built in , it is considered one of the finely constructed dams.The dam makes up for a scenic view and has also become a part of the tourism industry. A lot of tourists visit the dam because of its rich 85 year heritage especially during the rainy seasons.
