CIAL Solar Power Plant
Location: Kochi, Kerela, India
Type: Solar PhotoVoltaic (PV)
Status: Operational
Year of establishment: 2015
Installed Capacity: 3.1 MWe
Project Description
Cochin airport, India’s fourth-largest international airport, has become the first airport in the world to function completely on solar energy. The plant consists of 46,150 solar panels spread across 45 acres of land (equivalent to 25 football fields). The plant is expected to generate about 50,000-60,000 units of electricity per day, which is more than enough for the airport’s requirement.
Purpose/Application
To generate electricity for the airport.
Unique Aspect
First airport in the world to function completely on solar energy
Future Plans
CIAL has decided to double the installed capacity of solar power generation. Another 10,000 panels would be installed in the remaining space to generate an additional 2.40 MW power. Panels to be installed atop the building and the new park would help generate 4 MW and another 7 MW through panels to be installed over the three km-long irrigation canal would take the total installed capacity to 26.50 MW.
