Block Island Wind Farm
Location: New Shoreham, Rhode Island, U.S.A
Type: Wind
Status: Operational
Year of establishment: 2016
Installed Capacity: 30 MW
Project Description
GE and Deepwater Wind, a developer of offshore turbines, partnered to build five massive wind turbines and installed them in the Atlantic Ocean. They make up the first offshore wind farm in North America, called the Block Island Wind Farm. The turbines started delivering power to the New England grid on May 5, 2016, and effectively helped shut down a diesel plant that previously provided electricity to Block Island. The Wind Farm Project has been forced to shut down due to malfunctions in the system several times, however it still maintains long-term operation.
Purpose/Application
The system connected New Shoreham, Rhode Island to the grid for the first time and allowed it to cease using diesel generators, which have been replaced with power from the cable supplying the island.
Unique Aspect
The first wind farm in the USA with massive blade sizes that are twice as high as the Statue of Liberty.
