Project Description

The plant construction began in March 2008 and was commissioned in 2011. It is an integrated thermo-solar combined cycle power plant. The plant consists of two 150 MWe gas turbines fueled by natural gas, a 172 MWe steam turbine, a 183,200 squared meter solar parabolic trough (collector surface) field, a solar heat exchanger, and two heat recovery exchangers. The total capacity of the plant is 472 MWe of which up to 20 MWe is delivered by Concentrated Solar Power.

Purpose/Application

The Ain Beni Mathar (ABM) thermo-solar plant project ties in with the strategic thrusts of the national energy policy. Its objective is to help limit the country's oil bill and its dependence on petroleum products, while meeting the need for low-cost electricity, and ensuring satisfactory service and quality conditions. The plant is intended to broaden access to electricity by developing renewable energy to support economic growth, rural electrification, and the competitiveness of Moroccan businesses.

Unique Aspect

Apart from generating electricity, it has created jobs, reduced CO2 emissions, reduced fossil fuel bills and facilitated the access to social services for inhabitants of the village.
